John 1:1–10 – The Light Don Come
My people, make we talk small about the Book of John – that chapter one, from verse one to ten. This part of Bible no be just word, na deep thing wey carry power, wisdom, and truth. Make I break am down like Bayelsa fisherman wey dey slice fish for drying.
Verses 1 to 5 – The Word Weh Be God
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness cannot comprehend it.”
You see this part? Na John dey tell us say before anything ever start – before water full river, before fish dey swim, before sun dey shine – God don dey, and with am, the Word. This Word no be ordinary talk o! This Word na God himself. The way our elders dey talk say “word no dey fall for ground for nothing,” na so John dey tell us say this Word carry life, power and creation inside.
Na through this Word God take create everything. The mangroves, the rivers, the sky, the earth, even the mosquito wey dey bite person – all come from this same Word. When God talk say, “Let there be light,” na that Word move. E no delay. Light appear. So the Word get authority.
But e no end there. John say in this Word, “there was life, and the life was the light of men.” That means the breath wey you dey breathe, the sense wey dey your head, the peace wey dey your heart – all na from this Word. Na Jesus. He be the source of life, and this life shine for inside human beings as light.
You wey dey live inside Bayelsa – you know say once PHCN off light, everywhere dark like mangrove swamp for midnight. That darkness fit make person fear, stumble or even get lost. But once light show – peace don come. Na so Jesus be. When e enter person life, darkness – whether na sin, confusion, pain or spiritual blindness – go comot. Light don land. And no kind darkness fit challenge that light. E no dey possible.
Verses 6 to 10 – The Man Weh God Send Come Clear Road
“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to bear witness about the Light, that all might believe through him. He was not the Light but came to bear witness about the Light. The true Light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.”
John the Baptist na serious person. E no come for fame or to open ministry with big sound system. E know say he no be the Saviour. E no be the Light. Na witness e be. You know say for our place, before any big person waka enter community – like governor or paramount ruler – people go clear road, beat drum, inform others say the person dey come. Na the same work John the Baptist do.
God send am make e come clear road for Jesus. Make e baptize people, preach repentance, and open people eye say the true Light dey come. John no carry Jesus glory. E no form say na him be the messiah. E humble. E say: “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord.”
But see wetin happen. The Light – Jesus Christ – come enter the world. The same world wey he create. The same people wey him hand form. But dem no recognize am. Dem no welcome am. Dem mock am. Dem call am carpenter pikin. Dem even say e carry demon.
Just imagine say you build house with your own sweat – you lay block, fix zinc, paint walls – then when you enter the house, the tenants push you comot say you no belong there. Na so the world do Jesus. The Light enter creation, but creation push am one side.
Summary – Who Really This Jesus Be?
John no dey confuse anybody. E talk am plain. “I am not the Light.” That Light na Jesus. Jesus wey be the Word. Jesus wey be God. Jesus wey carry life inside. Jesus wey darkness no fit withstand. Jesus wey the world reject.
But even as the world reject am, those wey accept am, dem receive light. Dem receive power to become children of God. This Light no dey select. E no look whether you dey riverine, upland, poor, rich, fisherman, or oil worker. Once you accept the Light, the darkness for your life must scatter.
This same Jesus wey world no recognize na the same one wey fit turn your life around. E fit give you new beginning. E fit light up your mind, your spirit, your path. E no dey look how deep you don fall, or how far you waka go. As long as you come back to am, light go shine.
And today, e dey knock for heart. Just as John witness that time, I too dey witness today. Make you no do like the world wey reject am. Make you no wait till e pass before you recognize am.
Whether you dey inside canoe for Foropa, or for swamp area of Southern Ijaw, or you dey roast fish for Tombia market – this Word na for you. Jesus dey call you into light. E want shine for your life.
Final Word
My people, make we open our eyes. This life no get better direction without this Light – Jesus. E no matter wetin you don do or where you come from. As long as you gree for this Word, na new life be that. Darkness go pack.
You see that same Jesus wey dem reject? Na Him we dey preach. Na Him we dey follow. And if you never accept am, this one na your time. The Word wey create everything still dey call you. Accept am today. Let the Light shine.
