The Story of Lazarus
My people, make una come near. Today we go talk about one serious matter wey happen for Bible — the story of Lazarus. You fit don hear am before, but today I go break am down for una, like how we dey gist for Bayelsa side, under palm tree with fresh breeze from the river blowing small small. This story no be ordinary one. Na story of friendship, sorrow, power, and miracle. Make we begin.
Lazarus, the Friend of Jesus
Lazarus na one fine correct man wey live for one place dem dey call Bethany. The man get two sisters — Mary and Martha. These three siblings no be anyhow people. Dem and Jesus na padi for real. Anytime Jesus waka pass that area, e go branch for their house. You know say if person dey show you love, e no go hard to know. That na how Jesus take dey show dem love. He chop for their house, rest for there, and even discuss kingdom matter with dem. As e be, dem three love Jesus too. So the relationship tight well well.
But one day, wahala come. Our brother Lazarus fall sick. E no be small sickness o, the one wey dey carry person go another world if prayer no hold am. Martha and Mary try all dem fit, maybe give him native herbs or even small help from doctors wey dey nearby. But the sickness no gree go. The sisters send fast message to Jesus: “Master, the one wey you love, him dey very sick.”
Jesus Heard the News — But Waited
Jesus hear the matter. Him disciples dey with am that time. Instead make Jesus rush go as per say na him best friend, Jesus tell dem say, “Lazarus no die, him just dey sleep.” The disciples confuse. E be like say dem think say na real sleep Jesus dey talk about, like say the guy just doze off. But Jesus no dey talk anyhow — e get wetin him dey plan.
Jesus still stayed where e dey for two more days. Everybody surprise, but na him sabi. After two days, Jesus come say, “Make we dey go Judea. Lazarus don die, and I go wake am up.” The disciples still no understand the full matter. Some come dey fear say people for Judea go attack Jesus, but Jesus no look face — he know wetin him wan do.
Jesus Enter Bethany — The Mourning Ground
When Jesus reach Bethany, the place already turn to crying ground. People full everywhere — neighbours, family friends, people from town, all come mourn Lazarus. By that time, Lazarus don die four days already. E don pass burial time; body don dey inside tomb.
As Jesus enter the town, Martha run go meet am first. She cry come talk say, “Lord, if you bin dey here, my brother for no die.” You know that kain talk wey pain dey inside but still get small faith? Na so e be. Jesus look her, come tell am say, “Your brother go rise again.”
Martha say, “Yes, I know say for resurrection day, him go rise.” But Jesus come tell am, “I be the resurrection and the life. Anyone wey believe in me, even if e die, e go live again.”
As dem dey talk, Mary come too. She fall for ground dey cry. Jesus see as the two sisters dey cry, see as crowd dey mourn, e moved in spirit. That moment heavy well well. Bible even talk say “Jesus wept.” Yes o, the Master wept. That show say even God understand human pain.
The Miracle Moment — “Lazarus, Come Out!”
Jesus come ask, “Where una bury am?” Dem carry am go the tomb side — one big cave wey big stone dey cover. Jesus look the place, then tell dem, “Roll the stone away.”
People fear. Martha talk say, “Master, e don four days o, body go don dey smell.” But Jesus remind her say, “If you believe, you go see the glory of God.”
Dem roll the stone. Everywhere quiet. E be like say even breeze stop to blow. Jesus lift him eyes up, pray to Papa God say, “Father, I thank you because you always hear me. But for the sake of people wey stand here, make dem know say na you send me.”
Then Jesus shout loud, “Lazarus, come forth!”
Na so everybody eye shine like torchlight. E be like say world pause. Next thing — person wey dem bury begin waka come out from the tomb, him body still wrapped in burial cloth. Jesus talk again, “Lose him and let him go.”
You no go believe the shouting and jubilation wey follow. People begin shout, “He don rise! Lazarus don rise!” Even those wey never believe before begin see say this Jesus na true Son of God.
The Matter Scatter the Town
After this miracle, everywhere bust. Word spread like flood. People from different towns come Bethany to see Lazarus with their own eyes. The news reach even the high priests. Some happy, others vex. The miracle too big to deny.
Some of the Jewish leaders begin plan how dem go kill Jesus — imagine that! Because say person raise another man wey don die for four days, you wan kill am? That one show say evil dey human heart too.
But as for Lazarus, him life change forever. Him house come dey full with people wey dey come hear him story. You know say person wey don see death and come back get many things to say.
