Bode George criticises the court ruling that halted the PDP convention

The court's decision to postpone the Peoples Democratic Party's upcoming national convention has drawn harsh criticism from Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party.

The Federal High Court in Abuja's Justice James Omotosho on Friday prevented the PDP from holding its national convention in Ibadan, which was set for November 15 and 16.

The decision came after a lawsuit claimed that the party had not prepared for the event in accordance with its own constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission. According to Justice Omotosho, the PDP's failure to hold legitimate state congresses prior to electing new national officers weakened internal democracy.

Concerns regarding the opposition party's internal unity and preparedness for upcoming national elections are raised by the order, which essentially halts plans for the party's leadership renewal.

In response, George warned that the ruling might establish a concerning precedent and called it shocking and dangerous for Nigeria's democratic stability. He maintained that, aside from blatant instances of constitutional violations, political parties should be permitted to conduct their internal affairs free from excessive judicial intervention.

This nation will be consumed by this judgement. In a statement, George said, "It's time the judge got out of his gown and wig and went into politics." The PDP leader urged the National Judicial Council and Nigeria's Chief Justice to address what he described as an unwarranted intervention that could cause chaos.
