Powerful Weather System to Cause Storm Surge, High Winds Heavy Rain on Tuesday and Wednesday
Secure your belongings and remove any remaining Halloween decorations, as a big storm approaches.
A strong low pressure system will cause high winds, storm surge and heavy rainfall in many areas of the province beginning tomorrow and lasting through Wednesday.
Environment Canada's David Neil states that the potential for storm surge along the southern coastline, has led Environment Canada to issue a warning about coastal flooding.
Storm surge and coastal flooding might occur
He predicts "very high water levels along many coastal areas of the island and extending into Labrador. This will start near high tides later on Tuesday and continue over much of the coast across the island and into Labrador for most of this week. After this storm passes, it lingers off the coast. It moves away, but at a slow pace."
Wind warnings are in place
Wind warnings also cover the Burin and Avalon peninsulas. Strong east winds will blow ahead of the storm on Tuesday. Then strong west winds will affect the east and northeast coasts.
He says the east to southeast winds will blow at speeds between 80 and 110 km/h, with even stronger gusts possible in the warning areas. "When the westerly winds kick in behind the storm, we'll see gusts around 100 km/h maybe stronger. We're expecting gusts over 100 km/h in the southeast part of the island."
Heavy rain also a factor
Meanwhile heavy rain is also on its way, with up to 50 mm expected in many areas.
