Two thousand gold and silver coins are taken in another heist at a French museum

Two thousand gold and silver coins are taken in another heist at a French museum

Hours after the bold theft of some of the French crown jewels at the Louvre in Paris, 2,000 gold and silver coins valued at approximately €90,000 (£78,000; $104,000) were taken during a raid at another French museum.

The incident took place on Sunday night at a museum honouring French philosopher Denis Diderot in Landres, northeastern France.

Workers at the Maison des Lumières (House of Enlightenment) raised the alarm when they saw a broken display case when it opened on Tuesday, according to officials.

The local government told French media that the coins were chosen with "great expertise." It is the most recent in a series of thefts that have occurred at cultural institutions all over France

According to local media, the stolen coins, which were found in 2011 while renovating the structure that now houses the museum

are from 1790 to 1840 and are now a part of the city's private collection. Six gold nuggets valued at approximately €1.5 million were stolen by thieves who broke into the Natural History Museum in Paris last month.

Prosecutors claim that a Chinese national was detained in Barcelona in relation to this raid while attempting to get rid of some melted down gold. She is in pre-trial detention after being charged earlier this month.
