For the first time, King Charles and the Pope pray together

For the first time, King Charles and the Pope pray together and exchange gifts.

See the moment they first met. King Charles is the first head of the Church of England to publicly pray with the Pope.

Our religion editor writes that it is striking to see a pope and king praying together almost 500 years after the Church of England broke away from Rome. Why was the Queen dressed entirely in black?

The monarch is the head of state of the Church of England and has long advocated for fostering interfaith understanding. Here is what transpired prior to the service, including a private meeting with the Pope and a gift exchange.

Who is Pope Leo, the first American to hold the office, who was elected just five months ago? Our royal correspondent reports that King Charles was given an orange tree at the reception, which was published at 16:05.

This visit takes place against the backdrop of the Prince Andrew scandal, and the Palace is anxious to ensure that it doesn't overshadow the occasion. King Charles is currently enrolled at the Pontifical Beda College.

He is meeting Commonwealth ambassadors to the Holy See, British nationals employed at the Vatican, and trainee priests from throughout the Commonwealth at a reception.

The King waters an orange tree that was planted to commemorate his and Queen Camilla's visit in some recently received photos.
