Luka Doncic says his groin problem is "probably nothing" despite scoring 43 points in the Lakers' defeat.

Luka Doncic says his groin problem is "probably nothing" despite scoring 43 points in the Lakers' defeat.

What's happening

The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Golden State Warriors 119-109 in the season opener, but Luka Doncic had a fantastic game with 43 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists. After a hip twist late in the game, he seemed to feel something in the groin and inside of his right leg. After the game, he spent more time getting treated. Doncic downplayed the problem when questioned later. Most likely, it's nothing. My hip went [the opposite] way, so I only felt it slightly. I had a slight sensation, but it was probably nothing.

Additional reporting confirms he suggested it was more a hip-adjustment than an actual groin injury (although the symptoms, grabbing at the groin area, had spurred fear).

Why this matters

In the absence of Lakers star LeBronJames, Doncic's is now carrying a load apart from the Mavs. His health is therefore critical.

Groin/adductor/hip problems can linger and impact mobility, explosiveness, floor time. So even if it is not very big, we need to keep an eye on it.

Statistical output suggests he was still dominant: extremely efficient inside and around the paint (13-of-14 in the paint, 15-of-17 on 2-pointers) according to ESPN data.

For the team, its long-running third-quarter issues caught up with the Lakers despite his play, and questions now arise about depth, rotation and defensive consistency in a loss like this.

What to watch

If it's full practice in the days ahead, or if he's somewhat held back before being unleashed for good.

His upcoming minutes: heavy (40+ again), or if the coach will limit him to mitigate the risk.

Imaging (MRI) over the next 24-48 hours or if the team labels him as “day-to-day” (that would mean at least several more games missed).

Performance-wise:

whether there are any indications of impairment in speed off the dribble, agility, or lateral movement. Team dynamics: how other players step up and how the Lakers handle their workload without LeBron. My opinion In light of the circumstances, I tend to think that this is a preventative measure rather than the beginning of a serious injury. Together with the ongoing excellent performance, the remark that it's "probably nothing" is encouraging. But groin/hip adjustments are cunning; if disregarded, they may result in more serious problems. The Lakers will probably lower the risk, keep a careful eye on him, and hope it's only a short-term inconvenience.
