Popularity Shift: Jimmy Kimmel vs. Donald

A recent poll conducted by YouGov in collaboration with The Economist reveals an unexpected twist in U.S. public sentiment: late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is now more popular than former President Donald Trump.

According to the survey (conducted 26–29 September), Mr. Trump’s net favourability stood at –13 (41 % favourable / 54 % unfavourable), while Kimmel maintained a positive standing. That places Kimmel ahead by approximately 16 points.

The backdrop: Kimmel’s show was temporarily suspended in September amid a spat with the Trump administration, followed by a reinstatement that drew public attention.

The poll‐result is being interpreted as a symbolic moment: a mainstream entertainer surpassing a polarising political figure in popularity.
Political analysts note that this shift may reflect broader dynamics: fatigue with political tension, or a desire for lighter, non-political figures.

“When a pop-culture figure overtakes a high-profile politician in public favourability, the public is telling us something about the mood,” said one commentator.

Still, the implications for electoral politics are speculative. While television hosts don’t directly influence policy, public sentiment matters. If favourability of the leading political figure weakens, the margin for error narrows in campaigns, public outreach, and party messaging.

Critics of the poll caution: the snapshot may not reflect deeper currents of political alignment, and entertainment popularity often lacks the staying power of political support. Nonetheless, for now, Jimmy Kimmel holds a rare distinction: being ahead of Donald Trump in the hearts of surveyed Americans.
