Trump pushes Putin to end the war in Ukraine by imposing new sanctions on Russian oil companies

WASHINGTON (AP) — In an attempt to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and end Moscow's ruthless war on Ukraine,

President Donald Trump's administration announced new "massive sanctions" against Russia's oil industry on Wednesday. Following months of calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and bipartisan pressure on Trump to impose harsher sanctions on

Russia's oil industry—the economic backbone that has enabled Russia to carry out the gruelling conflict despite its relative isolation on the world stage—sanctions were imposed on oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil.

Shortly after the Treasury Department announced sanctions against Russia's two largest oil companies and their subsidiaries, Trump said of Putin, "Hopefully he'll become reasonable." Hopefully, Zelenskyy will also be reasonable. As they say, it takes two to tango.

While NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was in Washington for discussions with Trump, the U.S. administration announced the sanctions. The military alliance has been arranging for the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, many of which Canada and other European nations have bought from the US.
