Emma Thompson Discusses "Harry Potter," "Love Actually," and How Donald Trump Followed Her Around the "Primary Colours" Set — Locarno

At this year's Locarno Film Festival, where she is a guest of honour, Emma Thompson shared a fascinating story this morning about her eerie encounter with Donald Trump, the 47th President.

During a career Q&A in front of a large crowd, Thompson was questioned about filming the 1998 Mike Nichols feature Primary Colours. Thompson claimed that she was sitting in her trailer when the phone rang one day while the movie was being made. Donald Trump was the one. "Hello, is this Donald Trump?" he said. "How can I help you?" I asked, assuming it was a joke. Perhaps he needed someone to give him directions,” Thompson jokingly said.

"And then he said, 'I'd love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places,'" the seasoned British actress went on. Perhaps we could eat dinner together. "Well, that's very sweet," I said. Many thanks. I will respond to you.

Thompson, mimicking Trump's distinctive voice, claimed that at first, she didn't understand why the former Apprentice host had called her or how he had gotten the number to her trailer phone. But she made the connection right away.

"I became aware that day that I had received my divorce decree," Thompson remarked. Additionally, I'm willing to wager that he has people searching for suitable individuals to take on his arm. He was searching for a nice divorcee, you know. He also discovered the number in my trailer. That is stalking, after all. "I could have had a date with Donald Trump and then I would have a story to tell," Thompson continued. I had the power to alter American history.

Throughout the session, Thompson discussed a number of her films, including Love Actually, directed by Richard Curtis. Thompson claimed that because of the film's formal oddities, she is constantly perplexed by its popularity. It's not that I don't enjoy the movie; it's just that I'm constantly amazed that it survived. It's strange, but I really enjoy it," she remarked. Thompson stated that he thinks the now-viral scene in the movie where her character discovers her partner has cheated on her "touched a nerve because we get a heartbreak, especially women, we have to hide it because we don't want people to see it."

Really, it's not her crying that moves you. After she covers it up, she cleans the bed, goes downstairs, and is happy," Thompson remarked. However, Thompson showed less interest in her performance analysis when asked about her role in Harry Potter. It doesn't really play a significant role in my artistic pursuits. I sincerely apologize. To raucous laughter from the Locarno audience, she said, "I don't even mean to be disrespectful to those of you who enjoy Harry Potter, but you know, I came in, did a bit with glasses and a lot of hair, and then left having been quite well paid."

Last night in Locarno, Thompson received the Leopard Club Award for his career accomplishment. The celebration ends on August 16.
