Hours after the Louvre heist, gold and silver coins were taken from a French museum.
The theft of approximately $100,000 worth of historical coins from a museum honouring philosopher Denis Diderot was overshadowed by the theft of French crown jewels.
There were other French museums that were looted on Sunday besides the Louvre. Authorities said that a robbery of about 2,000 gold and silver coins worth over $100,000 from a small museum in the northeastern French town of Langres occurred,
which would have garnered much more attention on any other day or week given the national outcry surrounding the broad-daylight theft of French crown jewels that morning.
Late on Sunday night, thieves broke into the Denis Diderot House of Enlightenment, also known as the Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot. Diderot was a philosopher from the 18th century and the editor of the Encyclopédie, a significant encyclopaedia from the Enlightenment.
